The Best Waterproofing Coating for Swimming Pools

The Best Waterproofing Coating for Swimming Pools & Standard Application Method

Recommended Waterproofing System

The most reliable waterproofing for swimming pools is a flexible cement-based waterproofing coating (polymer-modified cementitious membrane), crystalline waterproofing, or advanced polyurethane/polyurea coating systems. For concrete pools, polymer-modified cementitious coatings are widely accepted as the standard solution and are compatible with domestic and commercial swimming pool construction.

Clinic Beton Iran Group (RBS-CONTECH) offers specialized waterproofing products for pools, compliant with international standards such as EN 14891, ASTM C836, and BS 8102.

Key Features of an Ideal Waterproofing Coating
100% Watertight: Provides a continuous, seamless waterproof barrier.
Flexibility: Accommodates minor substrate movement and crack bridging.
Chemical Resistance: Resistant to chlorine and pool cleaning chemicals.
Adhesion: Excellent bond to concrete substrate.
UV Stable (for exposed areas).
Non-toxic & Suitable for drinking water contact (EN 14891 & BS 6920 compliant).

Popular Products:
RBS Crystal Coat (crystalline)
RBS FlexCoat (polymer-modified cementitious)
RBS PU-200 (polyurethane liquid membrane)

Standard Application Method (According to EN 14891 & Manufacturer Guidelines)
Substrate Preparation
Ensure concrete is sound, fully cured (at least 28 days), and free of dust, laitance, oil, or previous coatings.
Repair all cracks and voids with suitable repair mortar (e.g., RBS Repair Mortar 300).
Grind/abrade and vacuum the surface.
Priming (If recommended)
Apply manufacturer-specified primer compatible with the waterproofing product (e.g. RBS Primer 100).
Mixing
Mix two-component cementitious coating according to the datasheet (typically powder and liquid polymer).
Application
Apply first coat of waterproofing (using brush, trowel, or roller) ensuring continuous uniform coverage; thickness 1–1.5 mm per layer.
Allow initial setting (typically 4–8 hours depending on product).
Apply second coat perpendicular to the first for full coverage; total thickness 2–3 mm.
Seamlessly treat all corners and joints (use reinforcing fabric/tape in critical areas).
Detailing
Seal joints, penetrations, and corners with waterproof tape/mesh embedded in the coating.
Curing
Protect the membrane from premature drying and mechanical disturbance (cure for 2–4 days).
Tile Installation (if required)
Use high-performance, flexible adhesive (EN 12004 C2TE S1/S2 category).
Grout with waterproof, chemical-resistant grout.
Testing
Conduct ponding test (water-tightness test) for at least 72 hours before final filling/use.
